Garage sales

PIV HOA garage sale posting guidelines focus on maintaining community aesthetics, safety, and traffic control, often limiting individual sales in favor of community-wide events.  Key requirements include specific, approved dates, restrictions on sign placement, and requirements for owner identification.

1. Scheduling and Frequency Limits

  • Restricted Dates: Sales are limited to specific, pre-approved community-wide weekends per year.
  • Frequency Caps: Residents are limited to one or two sales every 6 to 12 months.
  • Duration Limits: Sales are restricted to daylight hours, usually between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m. or 5 p.m., lasting no more than two or three consecutive days.

2. Posting and Content Requirements

  • Proof of Residence: Online posts must include proof of residency to ensure only community members are selling.
  • Mandatory Details: Posts must include the full address, specific dates, and start/end times.
  • Content Restrictions: Items for sale must be personal, used household items, not goods bought for resale (no commercial, flea-market style setups).
  • Prohibited Items: Restrictions exist against selling firearms, ammunition, hazardous chemicals, or recalled items (e.g., specific car seats/cribs).

3. Signage and Advertising Rules

  • Placement Restrictions: Signs are restricted to the seller’s private property and prohibited on common area grass, sidewalks, or right-of-way areas unless pre-approved by the PIV HOA Board.
  • Sign Specifications: Signs cannot exceed 2 square feet in size or 2–3 feet in height.
  • Removal Deadline: Signs must be removed immediately after the sale ends.
  • Directional Sign Control: The HOA may limit the number of off-site directional signs (e.g., to three) and restrict where they can be placed. For related guidance consult the PIV HOA Board through “Maintenance requests/questions.”

4. Safety and Liability Guidelines

  • Parking Management: Parking must not block driveways, fire hydrants, or mailboxes.
  • Liability Waivers: The association requires residents to sign a waiver to indemnify the PIV HOA, especially for community-sponsored events.
  • Traffic Control: Sales will be restricted to certain areas (e.g., only in garages/driveways, not on the lawn) to maintain the aesthetic and safety of the neighborhood.

5. Administrative Requirements

  • Permits: Residents must secure a city permit in addition to PIV HOA approval, even for community-wide events.  The City of Wilton Manors requires permits for garage/yard sales, with fees established by ordinance pursuant to Section 10-82 of the City Code. You must register and pay for the, according to the Island City Yard Sale Application
